Snowdonia and the Welsh Coast: Where to Go Beyond Cardiff

A lake surrounded by mountains in Snowdonia National Park, Wales

Wales is the part of the UK most visitors skip entirely, which is a genuine shame — Snowdonia alone has some of the best mountain scenery in Britain, and the coastline rivals anywhere in Europe without the crowds or the prices. Cardiff is a fine city break, but it isn’t really representative of what makes Wales worth the detour.

Snowdonia National Park centres on Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), the highest peak in Wales, reachable either by a genuinely strenuous but non-technical hike or by the Snowdon Mountain Railway if you’d rather arrive with your legs intact. Betws-y-Coed and Beddgelert make good bases, both small villages with real character rather than purpose-built tourist infrastructure. The Glyderau and the Carneddau ranges nearby get a fraction of Snowdon’s foot traffic and are, if anything, more dramatic.

The coast is where Wales quietly outperforms expectations. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs nearly 300 kilometres past cliffs, coves, and puffin colonies on Skomer Island in season. The Gower Peninsula, Britain’s first officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has beaches — Rhossili Bay in particular — that would be jammed with development anywhere else in Europe and simply aren’t here.

Practically speaking: Welsh road signs are bilingual (Welsh and English), and in parts of North and West Wales, Welsh is the everyday first language, not a ceremonial add-on — locals will happily switch to English, but it’s worth knowing you’re not imagining the accent shift. Train coverage is thin in the mountains and along much of the coast, so a car opens up far more of the country. Weather off the Irish Sea turns quickly, similar to Scotland — pack for rain even in July.
