Big Ben, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace are worth seeing once, and most first-time visitors rightly build a day around them. But London is really a collection of villages that happen to share a postcode prefix, and the neighbourhoods are where the city actually reveals itself.
South of the river, Bermondsey and Borough Market give you genuinely good food without the West End markup, and a walk along the Thames Path from Tower Bridge to the Tate Modern takes in most of the skyline for free. East London — Shoreditch, Broadway Market, Columbia Road on a Sunday for the flower market — has the city’s best independent shops and street art, and it’s a fraction of the crowd density of Covent Garden.
North London rewards a slower visit: Hampstead Heath for genuinely good walking and a view over the whole city from Parliament Hill, Camden for its market and canal-side pubs, Islington’s Upper Street for restaurants that locals actually use. West London’s Notting Hill is postcard-pretty on Portobello Road but gets very busy on market days (Friday and Saturday); go on a Tuesday if you want the coloured houses without the queue for photos.
On getting around: the Tube is fast but the Oyster card or a contactless bank card will always be cheaper than paper tickets, and walking between adjacent zones is often quicker than changing lines. Buses are slower but let you actually see the city, and the top deck of a double-decker remains one of London’s few genuinely free sightseeing experiences. Avoid black cabs for anything the Tube covers — they’re excellent but priced accordingly.
