Wales — Cardiff + Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, long weekend
Cardiff is one of the more underrated capital cities in the UK — a genuine castle in the middle of downtown (with a Victorian Gothic interior wrapped inside Roman and Norman foundations), a compact walkable center, and enough energy on match days to explain why it regularly ranks among the UK’s best weekend-break cities.
An hour north, the Brecon Beacons — officially renamed Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in 2023, though most people still use the old name — offer some of the most accessible serious hiking in Britain, including Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales and a genuinely achievable half-day summit for a reasonably fit visitor.
The pairing works because it’s the only Welsh itinerary that credibly fits a long weekend without a car-heavy multi-day commitment like Snowdonia or Pembrokeshire demand.
